Over the years, I have noticed that Medicare has become increasingly attentive to mental health issues—and they’re taking steps to help. The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is one such initiative. PHP is a structured outpatient treatment program under Medicare designed for individuals with mental health conditions. It offers more intensive care than traditional outpatient therapy, without requiring an overnight hospital stay. With PHP, patients receive therapeutic services during the day and return home in the evening.

Key Features of Partial Hospitalization under Medicare:

  1. Purpose: Designed for individuals with serious mental health conditions who need structured and comprehensive care but do not require full hospitalization.
  2. Coverage: Medicare Part B typically covers PHP services if they are deemed medically necessary and prescribed by a doctor. Services must be provided by a Medicare-certified program.
  3. Services Included:
    • Individual and group therapy
    • Occupational therapy related to mental health
    • Medical management of mental health medications
    • Education about the condition and treatment
    • Family counseling (when appropriate)
    • Diagnostic and evaluation services
  4. Eligibility:
    • A doctor must certify that the patient requires intensive outpatient mental health care.
    • The patient must meet criteria showing a need for PHP to avoid inpatient care or to transition out of inpatient care.
  5. Costs:
    • Under Medicare Part B, patients are typically responsible for 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for services.
    • The Medicare Part B deductible also applies.
  6. Exclusions:
    • Medicare does not cover meals or transportation to and from the program.
    • It also does not cover support unrelated to the mental health condition being treated in the PHP.

This option allows patients to receive intensive care while maintaining their daily routines, which is often beneficial for their mental health recovery.

Here is my disclaimer.  I gather most of my information from Medicare.gov and CMS.gov and to the best of my knowledge, it is accurate.  Please use this information as a guideline.

Before choosing an Advantage or Supplement plan, ensure you have a thorough understanding of Medicare itself. When it’s time to explore your options, don’t fall for a sales pitch from a single company or an agent representing only one provider.

At “More Plans More Choices,” I can provide you with side-by-side comparisons from various insurance carriers. More carriers plus more plans equals more choices.

My intention is to help make Medicare a little easier to understand.

Federal rules prohibit me from going into detailed plan information on this site. You can always contact me to talk about your situation. Again, there are rules, but we can talk about that later. For now, just browse my blog and let me know what you think.

Thank you.
