We know that you must have Medicare Part A and part B in order to get a Medicare Advantage or Supplement plan. So what are the requirements for Medicare Part D? Surprise, Part D is a little different. And, why wouldn’t it. You do not have to have both Medicare Part A and Part B to get a Part D plan. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  1. To enroll in a Part D plan, you must have either:
    Medicare Part A, or
    Medicare Part B, or
Both Part A and Part B
  2. You only need to be enrolled in one of these to be eligible for Part D.
  3. You must live in the service area of the Part D plan you want to join.
  4. You cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage if you want a stand-alone Part D plan.
  5. This flexibility allows people with only Part A or only Part B to still get prescription drug

My intention is to help make Medicare a little easier to understand.

Federal rules prohibit me from going into detailed plan information on this site. You can always contact me to talk about your situation. Again, there are rules, but we can talk about that later. For now, just browse my blog and let me know what you think.

Thank you.
