Medicare Eligibility vs. Enrollment: Understanding the Difference Between ‘Entitled To’ and ‘Enrolled In’.
The terms “entitled to” and “enrolled in” have distinct meanings when discussing Medicare:
1. Entitled to Medicare:
This means a person meets the eligibility requirements for Medicare coverage. Typically, this includes:
– Being 65 years or older
– Having received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months
– Being diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Being entitled to Medicare means you have the right to enroll in Medicare coverage, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you are actively receiving benefits.
2. Enrolled in Medicare:
This means a person has actually signed up for Medicare coverage and is actively participating in the program. Enrollment involves:
– Completing the necessary paperwork
– Choosing which parts of Medicare to participate in (Part A, B, C, and/or D)
– Potentially paying premiums (depending on the specific Medicare parts)
In summary, “entitled to” refers to eligibility, while “enrolled in” refers to active participation in the Medicare program. A person can be entitled to Medicare without being enrolled, but they must be entitled before they can enroll.

Before choosing an Advantage or Supplement plan, ensure you have a thorough understanding of Medicare itself. When it’s time to explore your options, don’t fall for a sales pitch from a single company or an agent representing only one provider.
At “More Plans More Choices,” I can provide you with side-by-side comparisons from various insurance carriers. More carriers plus more plans equals more choices.
