A couple of times a year I get a call regarding Medicare and Lift Chairs. I thought it might be something worth discussing today, just to clear the air. The short answer is both yes and no.
YES. Under certain conditions, Medicare Part B may cover the lifting mechanism of a lift chair as durable medical equipment (DME). That would be the motor and lifting mechanism.
NO. Medicare typically does not cover the entire chair.
So now you know that the lifting mechanism is covered. Don’t forget that you would be responsible for paying 20% of the Medicare-approved amount of the lift mechanism. Also be aware of your Part B deductible.
Here are the certain conditions I mentioned:
1. The lift chair must be prescribed by your doctor as medically necessary.
2. You must have severe arthritis of the hip or knee, or a severe neuromuscular disease.
3. You must be unable to stand up from a regular chair without assistance.
4. Once standing, you must be able to walk independently or with the aid of a walker or cane.
Remember that you must get the chair form a Medicare-Approved Supplier. The lift chair must be purchased or rented from a Medicare-approved supplier who accepts assignment.
Lift chairs come in all types of fabrics and sizes with many extra features you find in furniture today. I did a quick search and found prices from around $350 to $3000.
I suggest you start your search by contacting medical equipment dealers in your area. Ask them if they provide lift chairs and accept Medicare payment. If they are experienced in providing such equipment, they will know the proper way to collect the prescription and to go forward.
I’m sure this is not the answer some of you want, but there it is. The truth about Medicare and Lift Chairs.
Remember, If Medicare covers a item, your Medicare Advantage plan must cover it as well. Most Medicare Advantage Plans keep the 20% co-insurance on DME.
Before choosing an Advantage or Supplement plan, ensure you have a thorough understanding of Medicare itself. When it’s time to explore your options, don’t fall for a sales pitch from a single company or an agent representing only one provider.
